We take sourcing very seriously. What you put in your mouth and who puts it in your hands can change your life and the world. We consider the following factors when looking for makers:
1) Quality and taste: it has to taste good, consistently.
2) Local First: the closer, the better.
3) Small-Scale Makers: smaller makers have been shut out of the mainstream market because three empires control 70% of your grocery dollar; that has not been good for farmers or our health.
4) Sustainable Growing Practices: this means not only organic growing methods but, ideally, also farming in a way that's energy efficient and promotes biodiversity.
5) Affordable and Accessible: we believe healthy food should not be the purview of the privileged few; we choose our makers with that in mind.
6) Nutrition and Diet Conscious: we look for products that have no processing and no refined additives, preservatives or sweeteners.
7) Social Responsibility: we love foods that come from co-operative models, social enterprises, non-profits and fair or direct trade certified makers.
8) Transportation: no flown in products and better by ship than by truck.
9) Packaging: as little disposable packaging as possible.
10) Logistics: the boring part, but very necessary. We look for makers that can consistently make, store and deliver their product.
