All the food we carry is made with high-quality ingredients and never contains hormones; antibiotics; artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and other stuff you don’t want to feed your family. When an item in Our Market has not been labeled certified organic, there might be several reasons why:
1) We support small-scale makers. Organic certification is often not feasible for small growers and we believe it's important to support local small-scale farmers who are growing organically where there is a trusted relationship, even if their operation is not certified.
2) When there is no local soil-grown alternative, we occasionally opt for pesticide-free hydroponically grown produce, which, because it's not grown in soil, cannot be certified organic in Canada (it can be certified in some other jurisdictions).
3) We support farms who use sustainable growing practices: this means not only organic growing methods but, ideally, also farming in a way that's energy efficient and promotes biodiversity.
4) We love foods that come from co-operative models, social enterprises, non-profits and fair or direct trade certified makers.
